Description:

The transition from graduate student to early career psychologist can be anxiety-provoking. An early career psychologist is considered to be someone who has completed their doctoral degree with the last 7 years (State Leadership Conference, 2006). There are many demands and challenges for practice-oriented graduate students and early career psychologists. Some of the demands and challenges include a limited understanding of business-of-practice issues, health care reimbursement system (e.g., HMOs, Medicare, Medicaid, etc.), and fee-for-service practice opportunities. Other challenges might involve personal/professional balance issues, high personal and financial costs of licensure, confusion about post docs, isolation and lack of mentorship, and student loan debt. One purpose of this roundtable is to provide an open forum for participants to discuss these challenges and ways to overcome them. (Beginner)
